In Arabic, one symbol can represent multiple letters. The Arabic alphabet consists of 28 letters, each with its own symbol that is written from right to left. However, unlike the Latin alphabet, where each symbol represents one letter, in Arabic, symbols can take on different forms depending on where they appear in a word and which letters they represent.

For example, the letter "alif" (ا) is the first letter of the Arabic alphabet and usually represents the sound /a/. However, when this letter appears after another letter, it can take on a different form and represent a different sound, such as /i/ or /u/. Thus, one symbol can represent multiple letters depending on the context.

Additionally, there are some Arabic letters that look similar to each other and are differentiated only by dots and diacritical marks. For example, the letters "ta" (ت) and "tha" (ث) look very similar but have different sounds. Dots and diacritical marks indicate the differences between these letters.
