Time zone is an area of the Earth's surface where all residents use the same standard time. Each time zone has its own unique time offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which determines the difference between local time and UTC. The difference between time zones usually consists of whole numbers of hours, although there are exceptions, such as India, which uses a time zone that differs by a half-hour from the nearest whole number. When time crosses time zone boundaries, it is usually adjusted by the corresponding number of hours according to the time zone. For example, when a person crosses the border from one time zone to another, the time on their watch changes by one hour depending on the direction of the boundary crossing.

UTC

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is a standard coordinated universal time that is used as a reference to determine the time in different time zones. It is an international time standard that determines how much time has elapsed since the start of the day in Greenwich, England, in hours, minutes, and seconds. UTC is used to synchronize various time systems such as computers, international telephone networks, and astronomical observations. Unlike local time, which may vary depending on the time zone and the switch to daylight saving time, UTC does not depend on the geographic location and is always the same worldwide.

Science

Time zones are areas of the Earth's surface where residents use the same standard time. They were introduced in the 19th century when the telegraph allowed people to synchronize time between different geographic areas. Each time zone defines its own standard time, which determines the difference between local time and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Currently, there are 24 time zones, each of which is divided into hourly increments. Time zones are defined relative to UTC, which is the standard reference for determining time worldwide. UTC is used to coordinate and synchronize various time systems, such as computers, international telephone networks, and astronomical observations.

The difference between time zones is usually a whole number of hours, although some countries and regions use half or quarter-hour increments, which means that time is different from a whole number of hours. For example, India uses a time zone that is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of UTC. When time crosses time zone boundaries, it is usually adjusted by the corresponding number of hours according to the time zone. For example, when a person crosses a time zone boundary, the time on their clock changes by one hour depending on the direction of the boundary crossing.

Time zones can also change depending on government policy and legislation. Some countries may switch to daylight saving time, which means they set the clocks forward by one hour in the summer to gain extra daylight during the day. In other countries, such as Russia, a decision was made to abandon daylight saving time and switch to a permanent standard time zone.
