Surah Al-Isra (The Night Trip)

Dynamic translation

(17:23) Your Lord has commanded you to obey no one but Allah, and (do) good to your parents. If one or both of them reach old age, do not say to them, "Ugh (on you)!" and do not push them away, and address them with honorable words.

Arabic text

(17:23) وَقَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلاَّ تَعْبُدُواْ إِلاَّ إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِندَكَ الْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَوْ كِلاَهُمَا فَلاَ تَقُل لَّهُمَآ أُفٍّ وَلاَ تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُل لَّهُمَا قَوْلاً كَرِيمًا

Connected ideas

(17:24) Lower for them the wing of humility through mercy, and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they have raised me when I was small."

(27:19) There he smiled, laughing at her words, and said: "Lord! Expand my (opportunities) to (express) sincerity for Your mercy with which You have favored me and my parents, and (the opportunity to perform) righteous deeds with which You (remain) satisfied. And bring me, by Your mercy, into (the number of) Your righteous obedients."

(46:15) We instructed the human being to honor his parents. His mother bore him with hardship, gave birth to him in hardship, and his weaning lasts thirty months. Until he has attained his maturity, and reaches forty years, he says: "My Lord, expand my abilities to be thankful for the blessings You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteousness that pleases You. Let my progeny be righteous. I have repented to You; I am of those who have peacefully surrendered."

(46:17) And then there's the one who says to his parents: "Ugh on you! Do you really promise me that I will be cast out (after death)? - For you have already passed over civilizations before me!" They cry out to Allah for help, " Grief to you! Trust, for Allah's promise is true!" But he says, "These are nothing but Batomifs!"
