Related entries & more The Basmala (arabic: بسملة‎ basmala), also known by its incipit Bismillah (arabic: بسم الله‎, "In the name of God"), is the name of the quranic phrase bi-smi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm - بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ - "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" or "In the name of God, the Gracious, the Compassionate".

This is the phrase recited before each surah (chapter) of the Quran – except for the ninth.
