Shame is a negatively colored feeling, the object of which is some act or quality (philosophy) of the subject.

Shame is connected with the feeling of social unacceptability of what one is ashamed of.

For the feeling of shame to arise real or supposed witnesses of what one is ashamed of - those before whom one is ashamed. In the absence of witnesses shame does not arise, but a sense of guilt can arise.

According to some anthropologists studying shame and its manifestations, shame is more important in collectivist cultures (Japan, China, Brazil, Greece, Iran, Russia, South Korea). Whereas in Western cultures based on individualism, shame has been replaced by guilt. The importance of shame in collectivist cultures, among other things, is a consequence of the fact that in these cultures social norms are shared by almost everyone and it is obligatory to follow them.
