Dynamic translation
(9:42) If it were a near gain, or an easy journey, they would have followed you. But the distance was too much for them. They will swear by Allah: "If we could have, we would have come with you." They destroy themselves, and Allah knows they are liars.

(9:42) لَوۡ كَانَ عَرَضٗا قَرِيبٗا وَسَفَرٗا قَاصِدٗا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتۡ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُۚ وَسَيَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡنَا لَخَرَجۡنَا مَعَكُمۡ يُهۡلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَٱللَّهُ يَعۡلَمُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَٰذِبُونَ
Connected ideas
(62:11) If they come across any trade, or some entertainment, they rush to it and leave you standing, say, "What Allah possesses is far better than entertainment or trade. Allah is the best Provider."
