Namaz - directly related to namaste. Namaste (ˈnɑːməsteɪ, Devanagari: नमस्ते, Hindi: nəməste), sometimes spoken as Namaskar. Namaskaram is a respectful form of greeting in Hindu custom, found on the Indian subcontinent mainly in India and Nepal and among the Indian diaspora. Also in other parts of south-east Asia where there is little or no Hindu influence. It is used both for salutation and valediction.

Namaste is usually spoken with a slight bow and hands pressed together, palms touching and fingers pointing upwards, thumbs close to the chest. This gesture is called Añjali Mudrā or Pranamasana. Namaste can be spoken without the bow, however, the bow is more formal and is considered to be respectful, especially when directed towards an elder or a person of importance.

Etymology

From Middle Persian نماز (namāč, namāz, "reverence, prostration, prayer"), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *námas ("to bow, prostrate"), from Proto-Indo-European *némos ("(place of) sacrifice, worship"). Compare Sanskrit नमस् (namas), Ancient Greek νέμος (némos), Latin nemus.

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *námas ("to bow, prostrate"). The primary meaning of "bow, salutation" is Rigvedic. It is an "s-stem" formed on the basis of the verbal root नम् (nam) (नमति (namati)), meaning "to bend, bow, to submit oneself".

Proto-Indo-Iranian *námas, from Proto-Indo-European *némos, From *nem- ("to distribute, to give, to take") +‎ *-os (creates action nouns or result nouns from verbs) .

Related to namaste, borrowed from Sanskrit नमस्ते (namaste), from नमस् (namas, "bow, obeisance, reverential salutation"), and ते (te, "to you"), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *námas ("to bow, prostrate").

"Namaḥ" means "bow, obeisance, reverential salutation, adoration", and "te" means "to you" (singular dative case of "tvam"). Therefore, Namaste literally means "bowing to you". In Hinduism, it also has a spiritual import reflecting the belief that "the divine and self (atman, soul) is same in you and me", and connotes "I bow to the divine in you".
