What in traditional religions is called «Satan» or «Shaitan» in fact, is a state of strong emotional arousal, called in psychology - «Psychomotor agitation». Psychomotor agitation is a symptom in various disorders and health conditions. It is characterized by unintentional and purposeless motions and restlessness, often but not always accompanied by emotional distress. Psychomotor agitation is typically found in various mental disorders, especially in psychotic and mood disorders. It can be a result of drug intoxication or withdrawal.

Etymology

Traditional etymology

The word «Shaitan» (Arabic شيطان‎, abjadiya - 370, analogue in Hebrew שָׂטָן‎, satan) - came from the ancient Semitic «satan» - "adversary, slanderer, intrusive, importunate, annoying" - in the religious ideas of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) is the main enemy of mankind, representing the personification of evil, and pushing people onto the path of spiritual death.

Statement: the root shīn ṭā nūn (ش ط ن), is a combination (merge into a pair) of two roots:

1. shīn yā hamza (ش ي أ) - "to want, to feel a need, need for something";

2. ṭā yā nūn (ط ي ن) - "clay, alumina".

From 88 uses of the root shīn ṭā nūn (ش ط ن), 70 times it is presented in the form - noun «شَيْطَانٍ» in the singular, and 18 times in the form - noun «شَيَاطِينَ» in plural.

In Hebrew

1. «"שָׂטָן-satan"» - "saw-tawn'" (satan) - of uncertain derivation;

2. «"טִין-tin"» - "teen'" (clay) - of Aramaic origin, associated with «"טִיט-tit"» - (clay).



Shayṭān (Arab. شيطان‎, plural. شياطين shayāṭīn) is a malevolent creature in Islamic theology and mythology. They are usually assigned to the category of jinn. Apart from its generic designation, used with the definite article Al-, Shaitan refers to the head of shayateen, known as Iblis.

The Devil (from Greek: διάβολος diábolos "slanderer, accuser") is the personification and archetype of evil in various cultures.

In The Quran

Rebellious devil

(22:3) Among the people there are those who argue regarding God without knowledge, and follow every rebellious devil (Arab. شَيْطَانٍ, shayṭānin).

Projectiles against the devils

(67:5) We have adorned the lower heaven with lamps, and We made it with projectiles against the devils (Arab. لِلشَّيَاطِينِ, lilshayāṭīni); and We prepared for them the retribution of the blazing fire.
