Iblis

Iblis (Arab. إبليس‎‎) may have been derived from the Arabic verbal root bls ب-ل-س (with the broad meaning of "remain in grief") or بَلَسَ (balasa, "he despaired"), so the linguistic meaning of the word Iblis may be - "one who causes hopelessness / despair". The Quran does not portray Iblis as the enemy of Allah, since Allah is above all His creatures, and Iblis is only one of them.

Etymology

The word has two components - «ἀ-» - "prefix alpha privativum - used to form words that have the opposite meaning of the word to which it is attached" + «bliss» - "perfect happiness, divine favor, sanctification".

As a result «ἀ-» + «bliss», makes sense - "deprived of happiness, unhappy, dysfunctional, cursed".

Compare with English «evil» - "moral badness, wickedness, malevolence, the forces or behaviors that are the opposite or enemy of good", from Proto-Germanic «ubilaz» - "evil, bad".

In The Quran

Abless is one of the genies. For reasons unknown to us, he ended up in the company of angels. When Allah created Adam, He commanded the angels to subject to him. They obeyed the command of Allah, but Abless refused to obey the order.

(18:50) When We said to the angels: "Subject to Adam." They all subjected except for Abless, he was of the genius, so he disobeyed the order of his Lord. "Will you take him and his progeny as allies besides Me, while they are your enemy?" Miserable for the wicked is the substitute!
