Etymology

The triliteral root nūn sīn wāw (ن س و), according corpus.quran.com, occurs in the Quran 59 times.

Lassie (girl)

lass - "young woman, girl," c. 1300, probably from a Scandinavian source akin to Old Swedish løsk kona "unmarried woman" [OED], but other sources say perhaps related to Old Norse löskr "idle, weak," West Frisian lask "light, thin." Liberman suggests Old Danish las "rag," and adds, "Slang words for 'rag' sometimes acquire the jocular meaning 'child' and especially 'girl.'" "Used now only of mean girls" [Johnson, who has an entry for Shakespeare's lass-lorn "forsaken by his mistress"]. Paired with lad since early 15c.

In The Quran

(2:49) We guaranteed you from the people of Pharaoh; they were afflicting you (with) horrible torment, killing your children, and shaming your women (Arab. نِسَاءَكُمْ, nisāakum). In that was a great trial from your Lord.

(3:42) The Angels said, "O Mary, God has selected you and cleansed you, and He has chosen you over the women (Arab. نِسَاءِ, nisāi) of the worlds."
