At-Tawba (The Repentance)

Dynamic translation

(9:86) If a chapter is sent down: "That you shall acknowledge Allah and strive with His messenger," those with wealth and influence ask your permission and they say, "Let us be with those who remain behind."

Arabic text

(9:86) وَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتۡ سُورَةٌ أَنۡ ءَامِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ وَجَٰهِدُواْ مَعَ رَسُولِهِ ٱسۡتَـٔۡذَنَكَ أُوْلُواْ ٱلطَّوۡلِ مِنۡهُمۡ وَقَالُواْ ذَرۡنَا نَكُن مَّعَ ٱلۡقَٰعِدِينَ

Connected ideas

(9:38) O you who immune! What is wrong with you when you are told: "March forth in the cause of Allah," you become heavy on earth. Have you become content with this worldly life over the Hereafter? The enjoyment of this worldly life compared to the Hereafter is nothing.

(9:49) Some of them say, "Grant me leave, and do not test me." But it is in the test that they have indeed fallen, and hell is surrounding the ingrates.

(9:93) Indeed, the argument is against those who sought your permission to stay while they had the means. They accepted to be with those who remained behind; Allah stamped their hearts, for they do not know.

(24:62) Indeed, those who have trusted are those who (show) trust in Allah, and in His messenger. And when they find themselves with him in common cause, they do not leave (the assembly) until they (ask) his permission. For those who (ask) your permission - such is their (manifestation of) trust in Allah, and His messenger. And when they (ask) your approval concerning some of their situations, approve those of them to whom you wish, and (ask) Allah for their forgiveness. For Allah is a forgiving, merciful Allah.

(40:26) Pharaoh said, "Leave me to kill Moses, and let him call upon his Lord. I fear that he may change your system, or that he will cause evil to spread throughout the land."
