Etymology

The triliteral root yā tā mīm (ي ت م) occurs in the Quran 23 times.

Compare with Hebrew «יתום - yatóm» - "orphan (person whose either parent has died)".

Feeding the orphan

(76:8) And they feed food out of love to the poor and the orphan (Arab. وَيَتِيمًا, wayatīman) and the captive.

Helping the orphans

(2:83) We took the covenant of the Children of Israel, "You shall not serve except God, and regard your parents, and regard the relatives, and the orphans (Arab. وَالْيَتَامَىٰ, wal-yatāmā), and the poor, and say kind things to the people, and observe the Contact prayer, and contribute towards betterment." Then you turned away, except a few of you; you were objecting.

Testing the orphans

(4:6) Test the orphans (Arab. الْيَتَامَىٰ, l-yatāmā) until they reach the age of marriage. So when you notice that they (progress in) awareness, then give them their wealth, and do not deliberately consume it wastefully or quickly before they grow up. Whoever is rich, then let him not claim anything, and if he is poor then let him consume only properly. If you give to them their wealth, then make a witness for them, and God is enough for Reckoning.
