«Magical number seven plus-minus two»

«Magical number seven plus-minus two» («Miller's law») — is one of the most highly cited papers in psychology. It was written by the cognitive psychologist George A. Miller of Harvard University's Department of Psychology and published in 1956 in Psychological Review. It is often interpreted to argue that the number of objects an average human can hold in short-term memory is 7 ± 2.

The limited capacity of short-term memory has a variety of psychological consequences. It is possible that the magical nature of the number seven, which is reflected in proverbs (for example, "Measure seven times ..."), texts and beliefs, is due precisely to the volume of the short-term memory. The volume of the short-term memory undoubtedly affects the organization of speech. It was found that the number of semantic units in a phrase for its correct understanding should not exceed seven.
