Etymology

The triliteral root qāf lām bā (ق ل ب) occurs in the Quran 168 times.

Compare with Proto-Semitic root «libb-» - "heart", from which there are derivatives in:

1. Akkadian - «𒊮 - libbum» - "heart, abdomen, womb, mind, thought, intention, wish, desire, preference";

2. Classical Syriac - «ܠܒܐ - lebbā» - "heart, centre, middle, core, mind, soul";

3. Phoenician - «𐤋𐤁 - lb» - "heart".

In The Quran

(2:7) God has sealed their hearts (Arab. قُلُوبِهِمْ, qulūbihim) and their ears; and over their eyes (is) a veil. They will incur a great retribution.

(2:10) In their hearts (Arab. قُلُوبِهِمْ, qulūbihim) is a disease, so God increases their disease, and they will have a painful retribution, because they used to lie.

(2:97) Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel, then (know) that he has sent it down into your heart (Arab. قَلْبِكَ, qalbika) by God's permission, authenticating what is already present, and a guide and good news for those who acknowledge."

(57:27) Then We sent in their tracks Our messengers. We sent Jesus the son of Mary, and We gave him the Injeel, and We ordained in the hearts (Arab. قُلُوبِ, qulūbi) of his followers kindness and compassion. But they invented Monasticism which We never decreed for them. They wanted to please God, but they did not observe it the way it should have been observed. Consequently, We gave those who acknowledged among them their recompense, while many of them were wicked.

(66:4) If you both repent to God, then (be aware, that) your hearts (Arab. قُلُوبُنَا, qulūbukumā) have inclined (to wrong decision). But if you backup each other against him, then indeed God - He is his protector. And Gabriel, and the righteous of those who acknowledge, and the angels after that are his supporters.

Connected hearts

(4:155) So, for the breaking of their covenant, and their rejection of God's signs, and their killing of the Prophets without justice, and their saying, "Our hearts (Arab. قُلُوبُنَا, qulūbunā) are connected." Indeed, God has stamped upon their hearts because of their rejection; they do not acknowledge, except for a few.

(2:88) They said, "Our hearts (Arab. قُلُوبُنَا, qulūbunā) are connected!" No, it is God who has cursed them for their rejection, for very little do they acknowledge.
